    • Yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health.

I’m getting close to that age, this is good to know.

  2. Shannon

Mary–40 maybe the magic number, but I have found more and more women I know having breast cancer in their 30’s. My friend was 32 when she found out. So I say make sure you are doing your self exams every month regardless of not being quite 40 yet and if you find something suspicious–40 or not–demand a mammogram. :)

Great giveaway and great cause! Mammography is especially valuable as an early detection tool because it can identify breast cancer at an early stage, usually before physical symptoms develop when the disease is most treatable.

“Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer”

That information is very eye opening. To know this is so widespread and unfortunately common should definitely push the cure initiative

At this time, breast cancer cannot be prevented, which is why regular mammograms are so important; they can find breast cancers early, when they are easier to treat.

An estimated 40,930 breast cancer deaths (of which 450 are men!) are expected in 2008! Early detection, followed by appropriate treatment saves lives and increases treatment options. That’s why I get an annual mammogram. Do stand behind the “starting at age 40…”, start at 21, or before age 30 to receive your mammogram as more and more women are being diagnosed with breast cancer at an earlier age. And don’t overlook getting an annual pelvic exam and pap smear either.

Because doctor exams are only once a year, women should know how their breasts normally look and feel and report any breast change promptly to their health care providers. Breast self-exam is an option for women starting in their 20s.
