“Eye makeup can backfire if you choose a shade that competes with your eye color,” says Bobbi Brown. A good rule of thumb if you want to stay safe: steer clear of anything very dark or very bright. Here’s a guide on finding the right eye-popping hue for you:
- If you have blue eyes, try gray and heather shadows. We like Dior 5-Colour Eyeshadow in Street Casual and The Body Shop Eye Color in Pearl Grey.
- If you have green eyes, apply yellow-tinged taupe, camel or heather shades. We recommend Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow in Vanilla or L’Oreal Wear Infinite Eye Shadow in Earthscape.
- If you have brown eyes, stick with eye color in taupe, sable and mocha hues. Try Physicians Formula Retro Glow Illuminating Eye Shadow in Timeless Taupe or Trish McEvoy Water Stix in Taupe.

I think purples look great with my dark brown eyes (the key is to use sparingly; like eggplant as a liner with neutral colors on the lid or lilac accents with neutral colors as the main focus.) I look way too drab If I use too much neutral without any “pop” of color.
Purples also look amazing with green eyes!! My favorite shades to wear are darker purples with gold shimmer. They make the gold flecks in my eyes really stand out, and I’ve gotten tons of compliments!! Thanx Beauty Bunny, youre awesome!
I have a brown eye and a blue eye. I find it difficult to make my eyes pop. I do best with browns and blues, with browns working the best. Any greys make me look rather depressed. If you want a challenge, see what you can do for the minority.
what about hazel eyes? mine are green with brown and gold in the middle and a little blue around the edges. whats best for that?
I have hazel eyes exactly like what you are describing! its rally rare to have eyes with so many colors and my eyes tend to kind of changed colors. My eyes look best with a smokey brown eyeshadow, an eggplant purple accent and eyeliner, you may want to try this if you haven’t already. If your eyes look anything like mine it should work. I hope this helped!
i have beautiful bluey grey eyes and black looks great with them not light colours
Scazza – Yeah, my blue eyes only really pop with darker shades.
Okasan – I would think a green shade would work wonders! I’m thinking either a mint or leaf green from lid to browbone, then a jungle green shade lining underneath both eyes.
