While I do like my new haircut, all the glossy magazine ads featuring models with luxurious, flowing locks make me miss my long hair a bit. What better time to try out some goodies from a brand focused on hair growth like Dr. Miracles?

I experimented with the brand’s Intensive Spot Serum, intended to help with split ends, slow growth and breakage. The serum comes in a glass bottle with an eyedropper applicator, just like the ones for your skin. The texture is also similar to skincare serums, but the scent is a milder version of Dr. Miracle’s signature minty smell.

The “Feel It Formula” tingle the company is famous for is present, but not as intense as with some of their other products - which I’m actually happy about. The combination of the peppermint oil’s cooling effect and the slight itch tend to remind me of putting cold aloe vera on a sunburn.

I’ve got a hot Hollywood discovery for you girls: Keri Russell may be the star of August Rush and a new mom by day, but by night she’s a top secret celebrity makeup artist!

Liz McClean, Lucky magazine stylist and budding fashion designer, held a fashion show to display pieces from her clothing line. Guess who was caught doing the models’ makeup? That’s right: Liz’s friend Keri Russell brought along her own makeup bag and went to work.

“I didn’t do too much - it was about keeping the focus on Liz’s clothes,” Keri explains. “A litle mineral powder to smooth out skin, mascara, and lip gloss, and that was it!” Excuses, excuses… Keri’s trying to play it off, but I think she took a cue from her role as Ethan Hunt’s girlfriend and is something of a beauty secret agent herself. Go ahead - prove me wrong!

Kevyn Aucoin in Sex and the City

As my close friends know, I’m basically obsessed with Sex and the City. I can watch every episode over and over again. So you can imagine my surprise when while watching an episode called “The Real Me” yesterday in which Carrie models in a fashion show, I saw something I’d never noticed before: the late, great Kevyn Aucoin!

Kevyn pokes his head in the mirror’s reflection and consoles Carrie while she’s stressing over her model look. I know he’s not an original choice, but Kevyn is my favorite makeup artist of all time, because of simply that: he’s an artist. His love of makeup is in the creative, transformational vein, and his work is absolutely compelling. Don’t know what I mean? Below are a couple of his looks from Face Forward (go buy it now if you don’t own it):

Known for his celeb following, Napoleon Perdis has joined Jemma Kidd and Petra Strand in creating affordable designer makeup collections for Target. You’ll love this amorous and exotic look from Napoleon’s Soiree Set in his NP Set line. Here’s how to get it:

  1. Apply one coat of Pasarella Mascara.
  2. Use NP Set Concealer Pen to hide undereye circles or discoloration. Use lighter shades where you want highlights like the browbone and lid, and deeper shades where you’d like depth, like in the socket or crease.
  3. For a flawless finish, use NP Set Pasarella Powder Foundation’s built-in sponge applicator. First, press at the center of your face, then glide out toward the jawline. Put the foundation over your lips as well to keep any natural pinkness from showing through.
  4. Define the lid with the darker end of Show Loose Dust Duo in South Africa, then highlight the browbone with the lighter end. Extend the darker shade the width of your eyebrow in both directions, curling slightly upward into a cat-like point on the outer edge.
  5. Apply another coat of mascara. (We want to make sure the lashes look glam and the mascara gets good and dry in between coats.)
  6. Apply NP Set Eyeliner in Houston to the top and bottom lash line, extending the bottom line up along the lower edge of the shadow.
  7. Finish lips with NP Set Gloss in Hawaii. Don’t use liner; these lips aren’t too definite.
  8. Apply a final coat of mascara. You’re all set for your soiree!
