With the current state of the economy, it seems like everyone’s scrambling to make ends meet. If you’re on a budget these days and can’t spare the extra dough to buy some snazzy eyeshadow primer, here’s an easy alternative that works just fine.
Apply a little liquid foundation to eyelids with your fingertips before putting on eye shadow. I tried this with MAC Studio Fix Foundation and my shadow stayed perfect until I washed my face. No fading, no creasing – just flawless eye shadow all day long. Give it a try!

Great Post. Thanks for the information.
That’s great advice. Unfortunately, I don’t use liquid foundation so I don’t have any at hand.
However, I’ve found that Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer also works well with eyeshadows. I received a small sample tube with my purchase online and a little bit sure goes a long long way. It also makes for a great eraser when applied to a q-tip.
Sorry, I disagree. I wear a lot of fun eyeshadow everyday and I purchased Urban Decay Primer Potion over 4 months ago and the bottle isn’t empty yet (it was around $15) and it helps my eye shadow stick, and gives a nice clean base (I use it as a light concealer as well). I don’t where foundation and if your serious about your eye shadow staying on I think its worth it.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t use primer at all. I just wanted to give people an alternative. That’s what it’s all about, just knowing all of your options.
I did not even know such things existed. I think you have just vastly improved my eye makeup routine.
Thanks for confirming this! I didn’t want to shell out $16-17 just for a primer, so I’ve been using a foundation stick (it’s not dry, and nor is it liquid) instead. So far, it’s all good.
No problem, Vera! There are lots of cheap quick fixes just like this one out there…keep reading
Not all eyeshadow formulation applies to this, when using a cream to powder eyeshadow, even if I use liquid foundation (Clinique Superfit makeup) on my eyelids before applying eye makeup, it still creases. Sure the eyeshadows stays long but I believe that’s due to the staying power of the eyeshadow itself, no the foundation (I use Shiseido Hydro-Powder eyeshadow), but when using regular powder eyeshadows, applying liquid foundation and/or concealer, it does work.
hey, defaintly a great idea,i used to do the same, what also works if you dont use liquid foundation try using a bit of chapstick over your eyes before you put on the eye shadow, im a synchronized swimmer so we use it for competitions and it works great and doesnt come off in the water or during the day, to take it off just use warm water
what i like to do is add moisturizer and liquid foundation together. works great
Disagree with this.
Foundation makes my eyeshadows crease way more than without anything on the lid.
This will work for people with dryer lids for sure, but on oilier lids, this will likely worsen problems.
I simply use my Urban Decay Primer Potion. I buy it twice a year at most and use it almost daily.
Thanks for sharing a nice information, Anyways I’m using MAC Foundation for Eyeshadow, Ashley is right it will not help on oilier lids.
Anyways, I’m learning my artistry makeup course from makeup school in LA.
Instead of skipping primer you can always just buy at cheap one!!! At etsy.com someone makes a vegan one for about three dollars!!! Also eyeslipsface.com has two different primers for three dollars as well!!!
I’ve always used concealer stick instead of primer. But I may check into that vegan one Megan posted about :]
I have quite oily skin, and I tired this, it helpped but wasn’t great, but I found that if I use a little bit of talcum powder on my lids (don’t put loads on it will go funny) it helps to absorb some of the oil. For people on a very restricted budget like me, its a great idea, or even if your someone who does wear make up excet for special occasions.
