Did you know that 65% of women in the US have naturally curly hair? It’s true. Don’t fight your curls, girls – embrace them! You can style without spending 3 hours with a flat iron. Here’s a quick guide on making your natural frizz look sleek and controlled:
1. Prepare your hair: Curly hair is generally on the drier side, so don’t use a harsh shampoo and opt for a small amount of leave-in conditioner – we recommend Tigi Catwalk Curls Rock Leave-In Moisturizer.
2. Style your curls: Take a quarter-sized dollop of thin gel (don’t use the sticky kind, or your curls will look clumpy) and rub it between your hands. We like Sebastian Professional Laminates Sheer Curl Gel Weightless Shine.
Rub the gel down a couple of curls, then gently cup and squeeze the curls into shape from the bottom. This will maintain their natural bouncy shape without causing them to separate and look messy like the typical scrunching motion.
3. Maintain the look: To keep curls looking great all the time, you’ve got to fortify your hair permanently. Use a deep conditioning treatment with protein once every two weeks in place of your regular conditioner. Leave it on as long as you feel like it! We recommend using Frederic Fekkai Protein Rx Reparative Conditioner.

Gel never works for me because my hair is very dry at the ends. Even alcohol-free stuff doesn’t work for me. I usually use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, plus a deep conditioner every week (Aussie products rule, and I can get the giant bottles from Target). Then, I use VO5 conditioning hair dressing on my hair after I towel dry it.
Yes, it’s the poor-man’s curl-care routine (grad school pretty much killed any dreams of actually spending money on my hair), but it beats looking like Diana Ross.
Miriam, I love Aussie! If you have problems with gel, shine serums can provide a lightweight and moisture-heavy alternative – a good drugstore example is Garnier Sleek n’ Shine. (I have a review of it on here too, actually, if you search “garnier” on the sidebar search box. I really need to add my brand navigation widget back in. Grr…) But it seems like your current system is working for ya – your hair always looks fab – so why rock the boat, eh?
My curls are naturally really thick, however there is always a bunch of single strands of hair sticking out from the curls everywhere. How do I make my hair more…put together?
Gian,
Good question! Any frizz fighting you can do will help, especially with anti-frizz oils or serums like Frizz-Ease, which work to smooth the hair. Since brushes kick up static electricity and cause hair to go in a thousand directions, it’s also wise to finger comb or use an all-plastic wide-toothed comb with curly hair as much as possible. When it’s wet, use your fingers to smooth hair in the natural direction of each curl. That’ll encourage those wayward strands to dry the right way and cause you less grief when styling.
my curls are really rrizzy and dry i have always loved to straighten my hair because i never knew how to maintain my frizzy dry uh.. locks. but i saw this website and so i am willing to give it a try. i would like for my hair to look almost as close to this pic u have but i dont know how to get started. and i was just wondering is there anything else i can use in place of Sebastian Professional Laminates Sheer Curl Gel Weightless Shine because i heard it was discontinued. thanks.
I know curly hair is supposed to be really hot on a girl and every guy likes it better but i have MAJOR hair problems.
I have really curly hair and it is VERY thick. After I wash them they are really curly. If you look at my hair from the back its really nice but…the front is WILD and definitly not the best// kinda ugly curls!!! So my question is — What would you do to make it look better? Like…is there something i could do to make the front look good? Please give me a couple of solutions. Even if it requires a straighter or something like that.
Because of that problem, I absolutly NEVER wear my hair down in public. It’s the most annoying thing ever. Even up it doesnt look good so I really hope that you can give me a good suggestion so I can start having great hair..
Thank you sooo much
I should say…my hair is more frizzy/curly then curly. Or if it is called curly then the curls are not very big…normally they should be cute little curls but i call them little “do-stay-how-i-want-them-to” curls…
hi, jsut raeding this site and had to leave a comment, i have curly hair,
firstly, leave it long, never cut it shorter than your shoulders
2nd use MOUSSE after air drying your hair and then spray some haire spray onto palm and apply to hair, (instead of spraying directly-which could lead to frizz)
spray is really important, sounds odd and unhealthy but it holds curls and keeps them in the defined positions they appear in when wet
Also, i recommend taft mousse-supermarket schwartzkopft brand, cheap and is the BEst, not because its cheap , but because its good! all the expensive hair acre ones are usuly rubbish in cool looking bottles
it all dependsdo you want cool looking bottles or cool looking hair!
any spray is okay, experiment a bit to make sure its right strength for your hair.
One dilemma, i think i should be using some sort of serum/gel, i n australia wat brand would you recommend, anyone?
i also have an important occasion coming up, how do recommend one does their hair? out? half up? is up just gross with curly hair? headband? fascinator ? clip? flipped over to the side and out?? please help
