If you’d chosen someone to trade lives (or looks) with when you were a little girl, you’d probably have picked a Disney princess. Hannah Montana may not have been your generation’s flavor, but today Miley Cyrus remains Disney’s most explosive ingenue, despite her tabloid troubles.
The romantic hairstyle Miley wore to this year’s Idol Gives Back event was true fairytale with long, loose curls spilling luxuriously past her shoulders. This look works with any hair type: straight, curly, wavy, and even short-haired chicas can snag the style with these helpful tips.
- Prep freshly washed, damp hair with a lightweight mousse. If your hair is naturally straight, rough-dry with a blowdryer; if it’s wavy or curly, air-dry your hair instead.
- If you’re adding extensions, avoid synthetic hair; you can’t use heat to style it because it’s plastic and will melt. (Yes, really.) 12-16″ extensions work for everyday use, but to copy Miley’s hairstyle perfectly, go long with 21-inch extensions like 21″ HairDo Clip-In Human Hair Extensions from Jessica Simpson and Ken Paves.
- Wrap 1-2″ sections of hair around a 1-inch curling iron, starting close to the roots but stopping just short of the ends. Leaving ends straighter will keep this look modern so you don’t end up looking like a 1970s Miss America straight out of hot rollers. Curl any hair extensions you’re wearing using the same technique.
- Starting with the hair just below your ears, grab the edges of individual large curls between your index finger and thumb and pull them outward slightly. Continue down your hair, pulling the curls apart more and more until you reach the ends. This keeps the curls from being too tight and adds volume.
- To get fairytale luster, mist hair with a silicon shine spray. Pick one with a superfine mist like KMS SilkSheen Gloss Spray to avoid making the hair’s texture appear clumpy. Follow with a very light mist of hairspray – true princesses never look overprocessed!

How would I get this look if I have naturally very straight hair? Every time I try to curl my hair, even if it looks half decent the curls flatten out in just a few hours. Any tips?
