I definitely agree. Chop those babies off!

  2. Cheryl

I’m still in high school and although I’m not an “emo/scene” kid I actually think this sort of hairstyle(as long as it at the longest is grazing slightly under the eye) is a lot better than some other haircuts I see in hallways. My biggest pet peeve of a teenage guy’s haircut is a hideous buzz cut. It’s like, one day this cute boy in your class has an adorable head of brunette curls, or if he has some natural but not ubershort hair, then the next day he comes to class with barely any hair at all! *shudders*

  3. Amber

I know what you mean, Cheryl. I remember when my boyfriend first cut off his shaggy hair, I freaked! But now when I look back, I kind of like his short hair more. That happens with a lot of guys, though. Once they cut it off you can actually see their face and most of the time, they look a lot more handsome.

  4. Amber

Either way, the “emo” bangs need to be snipped!

  5. Not You

ya i have the long hair in my face and most guys decide that short hair makes you look like a complete **censored** and people(not me) may have big foreheads never know

  6. savannah

I want the long hair emo look but my mom said i cant..=(

  7. levi

bull s**t emo hair is epic

  8. alyssa

well you know waht i am emo/scene and well i know that the only reason we grow our hair out is cuz we hide behind it so i say keep the bangs the way they are

  9. liz

NO LEAVE THE BANGS THUR SWEET

  10. hanna

I believe many of the people of this bullitens post are missing the point of the statement originally posted. Callin was simply saying that there is a line between a stylish-edgy bang, and completly coating your face in hair.
Besides, when your bangs just become hair-in-the-face, they loose their cool effect. When two piercing eyes are peaking through some stylish bangs, it still owns the effect of “hiding”(if thats what you are going for),alyssa, only in a much more haunting and symbolic way. I mean if you are so sad, why not show the world your sadness in your eyes as they barely pierce through a “wall” of hair rather than cover the portals of human emotion. If people can’t see your eyes enough to see how miserable you are, it kind of defeats the purpose of being an “emo kid”, does it not?
I have tons of guy friends who are diggin’ the emo hair. They take care of their hair and they do it right though, even though it is becoming very cliche`.

  11. Stella

I like side swept bangs. NOT the look at the guy in the above pic either. This is a line. And I have heard some of my teenage cousins who sport this look say that it is non-comformity and different. Uhh is it really when every other teen has it too?? Think about it. Are you getting this haircut because you like it or because you ARE conforming?

  12. Eppie

Erm, got a bit of an issue with the hostility in her piece. Mostly ‘the new hipsters also have a name for their bangs – “fringe”.’

Only in the USA and Canada are they called bangs – a mistranslation from either Dutch or, more likely, German (since Americans hear Deutsch and think Dutch). But everywhere else it’s your fringe- like fringing on fabrics.

That said, it’s quite funny watching those with full-on fringes try to navigate a crowded street.

  13. skyler

k, now i have hair past my eyes, but it splits around my right eye and i dont have it dyed black, but i sure as hell love this guys haircut and those scene girls are HOT AS HELL!!!

  14. katelyn

fringe is just the europen word for bangs…

  15. Dea

I like that style, but I do think that it looks better if it’s more layered and styled instead of just cut across the bottom of the face. But it’s not my hair, I say let them have whatever they want on their face haha.

  16. donny

umm no keep the bangs.. im a big dude and i noticed when i cut my hair to a buzzcut girls didnt find me as attractive… emo hair is a big deal. im still trying to grow my hair back out as we speak :(

  17. MsNiightmare

“That said, it’s quite funny watching those with full-on fringes trying to navigate a crowded street.”
“Here’s a rule: if you can’t see past them, they’re not bangs – they’re just hair.”
It’s not that hard. I can see perfectly through my fringe. Hair isn’t completely solid, there are breaks in the hair, and I keep my hair over my left eye, but I can see just fine with my right eye closed. You people amuse me. :3

  18. X cas X

i am a so called emo or scene kid but i dont have normal emo or scene kid hair. i have a buzz cut with a short fringe in the front that hits rite a bove my eyes. most people think im a boy and are shocked to find out im agirl! what do u think? in my opinion its damb sexy! (LOL)

  19. X cas X

  20. Alex

You all make me sick. It’s your own choice how you have your own hair. Personally, I think long bangs like that are hot. I have bangs that go past my lips and i like it

  21. none

i just think ur a b*tch! I PESONAL LIKE MY CHOPPY HAIR AND MY BLACK EYES AND MY SISTER DOES TOO. SO GET OVER URSELF AND STOP TRASH TALKING PEOPLE ON HERE BECAUSE UR TOO GOOD TO TELL IT TO THEM IN PERSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Evan

    SCREW YOU! EMO BANGS ROCK!

  23. Sophie

I would never have bangs like these. That said, lots of people look neat with them.

  24. Rachel

In England they’re not called bangs they’re called fringes, so that’s where that’s come from; whenever i hear someone call them bangs it just sounds really strange.
I personally think it’s up to you how you wear your fringe, differenct styles suit different people, some look really cool and some just look ridiculous.
I went through a stage of having nearly half my face covered by a side fringe, which was just really dragging some of my layers forward which looked quite crap, but if people choose to cover most their face it’s up to them.
Also last time i saw him Pete Wentz’s hair wasn’t even that long, i know both girls and boys who have much longer hair than him which look good.
And lastly, it’s easy to see through fringes, my dad always goes on at my boyfriend for having his hair covering his right eye, but he can see through it just fine.

  25. despaired emo

keep the bangs if you like them you like them if you dont too bad dont look,

  26. jen

covering 1 eye is normal i think, but covering both eyes, half of your face, down to ur nose thing, and not even pushed over to 1 eye? now thats just plain weird. It looks like a person without bangs decided to brush her hair all around in a circle so no one can see her head.

  27. swiftbn

yes, i do love, have, and wear peek-a-boo bangs or what Europe natives call it, fringes. ive always loved wearing and allowing my hair to fall and to be in my face and in my eyes. for it may sound crazy, but just to feel it and in knowing that its there whether i put my hair up or in letting it down, i just could not and would not see myself not having my hair this way. for me it’s my signiture hairstyle. wearing my hair long and down, for it falls to the middle of my back, makes me feel secure. it’s the style that makes me who and what i am. i seldom slick/pull back or tuck my hair behind my ears other than the side that doesnt overlay my eye, and thats the only side that i normally slick/pull back, or tuck behind my ear(my right ear). for the most part i feel that this kind of hairstyle is very pretty, sexy, can and most certainly will bring attention when you are not the least expecting it. the only period when i just simply cannot take it or cannot stand it in my way is either when im driving or when im cooking. any other occasions like when im watching tv or cleaning, it’s not really a bother; it would be what i prefer. just push it or wipe it back out of your eye, or to feel sexy/pretty, or even when you just dont feel the urge to push your bangs/fringes back from your eyes, just flip or toss your head to make it move out of your way, face, and eyes; it can work wonders for whoever loves this style; nonetheless, whether the world disagrees with the emo/peek-a-boo bang/fringe hairstyle, take it from me all of you who are influenced by what they say and think of you, the style is revolutionary. it’s sexy, pretty, and feels great; try it if you havent already. what have you got to lose. you’ll never know—you just may love the look and others may too.

  28. Tra la la laaa

But bangs look so kewl :D

  29. Kristen

I’m generally stuck in with the ‘emo’ crowd because I have snake bites and black/pink hair. I have longish bangs, but they are side-swept, out of my face, and look structured but not shlacked down like the stupid in-your-face bangs that act like a wall in front of a person’s face. It basically pisses me off because I hate being grouped in with people who can’t seem to find a proper style for their bangs so they just let it hang in their faces! I think if they’re going to have choppy bangs hanging in their faces, it should be somewhat shortened and styled, so it doesn’t look so retarded. Or go to a salon and talk to a stylist about a hairstyle that would suit you so you don’t have to ‘hide from the world’ all the time.

  30. Megan

ok really? its there choice of how their hair looks not yours. And personally I think the boys with that type of hair is hot on them. I think that the guys like it and they know girls love it to and there just in highschool or even middle so let them live how they want and let them have the hair they want. They might even change it when they go to collage or out of collage. But please let the kids explore the different types of hair. And personally I think that its better they go this way because its different and not normal, normal is boring. That is what I think

  31. Grottesca

Personally, I love that style. You may not like it, but it’s pretty ignorant for you to say that “you’re right” about it being stupid. Everyone has their own opinions, and it is idiotic to say a certain style is wrong just because it does not meet your own personal preferences.

My bangs are not THAT long, yet, but, you can in fact see through the hair even if it is covering both eyes. I rarely keep my bangs covering both eyes, but I usually always have it covering my left eye. Also, Pete Wentz was not the one who invented this hairstyle. It has been around long before he even became famous.

It’s not even about “emo” at all for me. Even if no one wore their hair like that, I still would, because I absolutely love how it feels to have my bangs fall over my eyes and whatnot. It gives me a cute/mysterious look and I personally love it. Well, my hair isn’t exactly like that. Except for my bangs, which almost reach my lips, my sides are shoulder length, and the back is even longer. I absolutely love it, and am growing it longer. And I’m a guy ^_^

  32. Dakotaa

HE LOOKS HAWT<333 His hair looks soo awesome! See, people don’t know what style is these days, i hate preps! They annoy me me with their scrunched hair, annoying attitudes; etc. GO EMO! xDxDxD

  33. Dakotaa

I already made all of my friends get reasonable haircuts.
    -x–x-
That’s so racist! Leave people and their hair alone!

  34. nobody

  36. ashley

ESPeCIALL THE CAILIN YOU AINT RIGHT SO BACK OFF BTW UR HAIR IS UGLY IN MY OPpINION GO EMO EMO IS WHAT GOOD yOUR HAIR lOOKS LIKE THE BACK OF A BADLY SHEERED GOAT

  37. Rachell

I agree with you Cailin. Some of these haircuts can look edgy and cute, but when someone’s part starts WAY in the back of the head and all the remaining hair is pulled forward to become “bangs” or as you put it “hair in the face” it just makes me want to punch the moron in the head. It’s like they’re trying WAY too hard. Or when you see the kids with sidebangs that look like a hair headband that’s wrapped around the forehead – IT.LOOKS.STUPID.

For the rest of you fuc*tards, guess what? It’s Cailin’s article and she can voice whatever the hell opinion she wants. The rest of you Hannah Montana, Pete Wentz worshipping douche bags can get back to writing shi**y poetry and cutting yourselves.

  38. binkybopper

HE is hott with the bangs and you people need to shut the f*** up all you do is f***in complain blah blah blah
complaining does not get u any where so stop and look and get a life cause u are lameeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  39. Nichole

    Oh my Cailin….

*prays emo hasn’t somehow become a racial trait that today’s teens could pass on to their even more whiny lovechildren*

Your not only stylish but witty as well. :D

“emo” and “scene” have become the norm among teenagers living in middle income suburbia. The last real bohemian revolution was in the 60’s and this new THING sweeping the nation is no more than a phase… no one will remember it in fifty years.

Let your “fringe” drip down your face but please don’t ask everyone else to love it. This is America.. the land of free speech.

  40. Xanthe

While I am a fan of /some/ emo haircuts, I think you really need to be able to pull it off. (I think the guy in the picture can, actually…) In my area we have a bunch of emo-ish guys who have really interesting hairstyles, with the bangs and everything, and they always look great.
But this hairstyle is getting old and boring. More face please!

  41. ILIKEMUFFINS

i completely disagree. everyone thinks that with long bangs you cannot see through it, but if you haven’t read about Emo hair then DO NOT say you can’t see through the bangs, because Emo hair is generally thinned out alot, so you can see perfectly fine. id know..

plus Pete Wentz is an Emo wannabe.. personally i think that all Emo people DON’T think they are Pete Wentz, and they wouldn’t want to be, Emo is an expression of a persons individuality, so why would they copy Pete Wentz. oh and to quote.. “or as the cool kids call it “Scene” Scene isn’t another term for Emo, they have many of the same characteristics though. the same hair but with many more bright colours, and the clothes are the same but brighter, and to define it overall..
if you take an Emo kid. he or she would usually be much more quiet.
and if you take a Scene kid. he or she will be texting their friends telling everyone about when the next party is, overall Scene kids are less shy. that is my personal view on the Emo style.

    ~~RY~~EMO~FOR~LIFE~<3~~RY~~

  42. ILIKEMUFFINS

NICHOLE, Emo isn’t about asking everyone to love your hairstyle.. its about making a statement, and just to add to it. not everyone lives in suburbia, and also it isn’t the norm among teens. wherever you go, there will be someone who dislikes you, if you are Emo or Scene, you don’t care about that. there is always someone who will dislike you no matter what you look like, so as for the Emo and Scene, if you get commented on you carry on as you were. everyone is allowed to have their own opinion, and Emo and Scene people are allowed to dress how they want, the style is about YOURSELF being happy with how YOU look and not how other people will see you because if you subject yourself to other peoples opinions then you cannot simply be yourself, that is why society is changing so much, too many people are afraid of being themselves.

    ~~RY~~EMO~FOR~LIFE~<3~~RY~~

  43. ILIKEMUFFINS

oh and one final thing Cailin, if anyone has a ridiculous choice in hairstyle. its you, for not being yourself. stop trying to be perfect, following the crowd, and being afraid to show who you are.. too bad that your yet another person that is ashamed of who you are, too many people like that these days. pathetic really.

    ~~RY~~EMO~FOR~LIFE~<3~~RY~~

  44. VSMITH

Oh dear lord. this is literally the worst thing I have ever read in my life. Cailin, you embody the spirit of every preppy acting girl I’ve ever met in my entire life, and it truly makes me sick.

I don’t do the fringe look, though I did at one point, because, believe it or not, girls (or at least normal ones) find it attractive, and thus I find myself believing you’re not exactly normal.

I’m more than positive, however you were a total preppy, possibly cheerleading b*tch in highschool. Was I correct there?

    I’m sure I was.

You’re also more than likely and avid christian. You probably find metal music disgusting.

This entire post was a ridiculous piece of inane banter, and so was this response. I didn’t mean to even find this page, I was searching for something else and happened to find it. Then, after reading it, I found it needed to say all this.

Don’t bother responding to this. It won’t help you any. I’ll never see this sh*tty page again.

Good luck in life with that whole emo-and-or-goth-and-or-scene-hating lifestyle, and all the discrimination that it entails. And have fun wishing you were the perfect girl by following the crowd and jumping the bandwagon. Why make fun of a hairstyle for being conformist when you yourself look like every washed-up-wannabe-actress.

    Vanna White anyone?

    That is all.

  45. danielle

    hypocrite

“Is it only genuine if my razor-cut bangs express the dark black pain deep within my soul?”

“PEOPLE ARE NOT DEFINED BY THEIR CLOTHES, SHOES OR *gasp* THEIR HAIRSTYLE.”

  46. Kit

I find it to be superattractive when guys have fringe. emo guys and girls in general are hot. some hairstyles do push it… but i see that you’re supporting the fringe just not the facecovering. only the posers cover theyre whole face. they try to take it too far and emphasize the emoness.

my hair is long, past my chin but the bangs only cover my right eye, contrary to the popular style which is to the left. i can still see perfectly out of my eye. and navigating crouded streets is simple. you can see fine…

  47. milla

almost all the kids at my school are starting to do that.it isnt even unique anymore!everyone has it and makes the whole school look cloned and ridiculous.no one ever looks different anymore with the exact same hairstyles practically.i mean, im digging (hahahaha) the hairstyle and all but its just not as great as it used to be.now, if you dont have emo hair your pretty much thee lamest person.and people who used to look cute with regular hair or bangs no push it over one eye just to fit into the crowd.its like a huge poser group now. scene is a style and emo is an..expression of the mind and most people are getting this confused.like i said before, i love the hairstyle but its gotten annoying how everyone as it.

  48. Baculus

People will certainly hate me for this post. Good. They need a kick in the pants to shake them out of this absurd sub-culture. Go listen to real rock-n-roll and find out what being a rebel really means.

Kids have the most retarded sense of style these days, and the overly-long “Emo” bangs appears absolutely idiotic. They look like “Cousin Its,” all with their hair hanging over their face.

And this is coming from a dude with very long hair, but I keep it brushed or pulled back.

I do think some of the “choppy” emo/scene haircut is interesting, but it really reminds me of the 80’s LA Glam metal style (which most real metal heads thought was completely lame) or even some of the 70’s style of hair. So, it is not an entirely unique haircut (nor style of clothing).

Bur really – there is nothing “metal” about the emo/scene…scene.

By and large, the girls tend to look cute with this particular style of hair (except for the stupid Myspace expressions they all wear), and the guys simply look (and sound) whiny. They do also all look the same – like little clones: the same pierced lips; the same hanging black hair; the same vacuous, sort-of-trying-to-look-tough-but-instead-looking-like-a-wanker expressions. The same sense of fashion that would have marked them as a homosexual in year’s past.

It’s simply awful stuff and a really bad excuse for rebelliousness.

I will be SO happy, though, when this trend will fade away.

  49. Stina

Im not even scene or emo or whatever you wanna call it, but WHO CARES. like seriously? if they can see out of them, then why does it matter.

and the word “fringe” isn’t a new hipster word. its actually the correct word for “bangs” learn more before you talk sh*t.

  50. Shane

Well, I love “emo bangs”. And I loved your comments about emo being a racial trait. XD

It gives any guy or girl a sense of mystery.

  51. bebo

u guys suckk,,,wasting time talking abt just a hairstyle

  52. Kayla

Dude I think those bangs are fine I have bangs that cover both eyes at like a angle. It starts right below my left eye and it comes down to my cheek I think those bangs are super sexy!! My bf has “emo” bangs to. Its their hair and if you do not like it then oh well dont talk to that person or something. I love my hair and I am not changing it cuz abunch of people do not like it, my hair makes me feel better and more comfortable.

  53. carter

    wow
all of this over a hairstyle
just because someone doesn’t like your hairstyle doesn’t mean they dont like YOU so no need to be so defensive

im not emo,but i do have razored, black and blonde, straightned, long hairand i kinda agree with op on one note
it doesnt need to be in your eyes
imo it looks nicer pushed aside
    like THIS http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_30V00mdlp2E/SZhsU8jqe-I/AAAAAAAADXM/91YWzU0a-Q0/s400/Oli+Sykes+11.jpg

  54. Kitten

Its a hairstyle! Calm the f*ck down! I have been sitting here reading all these comments on a hairstyle, so what it’s popular with us Teens big deal adults find it ugly and stupid. It’s true okay, ignore what people say and just wear your hair how ever you damn please. Quit the whining it’s stupid. But remember its a STYLE not a CULTURE! Also, don’t get mad at others opinions, if you don’t like it ignore it, don’t b*tch at them because of what they believe and before some jackass reads this im not christian i don’t believe in god or any other gods. Now be happy you have the hairstyle or you support it. Quit acting like kids and grow up, it’s so stupid half of you have to fight about a hairstyle. Fact: THIS WAS MY OPINION!!! DON’T GET PISSED!!!!

  55. Moonlitecrystal

I agree, bangs that are cut into to spiky points or massive chunks around your face/on you face, are not bangs but in fact hair. I just recently got my bagns cut, I got my sides layered and my bangs cut into a side swept do. THey layer over the top and slightly over my left eye. I can still see though. Hair that makes it hard to see is just over done. You should choose something that fits your face over every thing else. The golden rule of style. Choose something that fits you, not everyone else.

  56. iDunno

    Ok, Well He’s Hot [x
    & You have a complain about it…
    you dont like it…
    its popular….
    well well well.
your not the one with hair are you now darling?
so what. i dont think short hair is cute.
but i see tons of people with it.
    oh well. DEAL

  57. iDunno

holy shit. carter. lol i love oli sykes
his hair isz awesome but i mainly like him for his face ;]

  58. wow.just.wow

….why do people even bother making pages like this. It only started because she said she didnt like the hairstyle, and thats ok. its an opinion. then everyone else takes it to heart and complain, and then theres a war. why bother fighting over the stupidist things? seriously…so you dont like it. who cares. so you do like it. so what? just move on with your lives and stop bickering over HAIR. my god, its only hair. who cares what it looks like. its yours, not theirs. people in this century are so judgemental. why? im not gonna say shut up and get a live, cuz i put this up…so i dont have one either, but come on. drop it already. ITS ONLY HAIR.

  59. Shua

I must agree Cailin the hair does not belong in the face as shown. I have a similar hair style which I wear differently ie not in the face. I have actually had the style many other times in the past as well. I like the full head of hair feeling with the look of lots of texture. Being raised by a hairstylist I had seen many hair style trends come, go, comeback, and go again. This one too seems to repeat itself in the “Subculture”. I have seen this as early as the rockers and punks against disco and now the “Non Conformists and Conformists” whatever thats supposed to mean.

Also who do these kids…yes I said kids cause adults don’t behave like that…think they are. They probably don’t relize that their parents once did the very same things that they do today. If they did they wouldn’t have to pretend like they are so “different”.

If I have a need to hide I put on sunglasses. Yes, I even wear them inside if I don’t want to be bothered.

  60. Cailin

iDunno – actually, I DO have hair. So by your definition, I can complain. Yay!

Wow.just.wow – it’s a war now?? Awesome! I’m so honored that these Death Cab fans — err, disenfranchised youth have a place on my blog to fight the good fight.

  61. valerie

Okayy. i still like to call them fringe. i agree there to long but mine are eye legnth and pointy with blonde highlights on them but i still snip them when they get past my eyes. That’s what you call emo “fringe.” Oh by the way the bangs are style and tradition for you guys’ imformation. :P . Uhhnm and one more thing no one cares about your dam opinions it’s their style not your’s we think you guy’s look rediculas with your hair all curly and those side “bangs” all curly yeah aha that’s style for suree. Not.

  62. Alicia

    dudeee. that’s bull
Scene Hair Dominates.. Stop your b*tching. Let us be the way we want it’s not YOUR life or YOUR head. It’s major hot on guys and cute on girlss. plus i love the peirceingss(monroe, snakebites..etc) lol just my opinion..

  63. Cassie

    Wow immature much. o.0
not you Cailin, this whole “debate”

    a trend is a trend,
    every kid has one.
    Some think its stupid,
    others dont.

If you like it, than do it!
no one should care what anyone else thinks
or posts online right? Cailin i respect your opinion,
but you should have known this was gonna start a little
    immature debate -.-

  64. *Faith*is*an*illusion*

Cailin unfortunatly I also stumbled upon this page just like VSMITH. I am a person who would express their rage among the others but for some reason I’m not. I am in love the haircut, the clothes and how they fit my personality.

To some emo is a style to others it’s their way of life, you must respect this and be willing to understand others feelings. No one deserves to be judged upon their looks so please next time if you want to express your feelings towards hair, clothes, or whatever prepare for a battle because the people this really matters to are going to fight for what they believe in.

  65. Sean

    emo girls give good head

  66. emo4lyfe

all of us emo people are all different. that’s why we all dress and wear our hair in similar fashions. it expresses our creativity. every time i see someone with the same hair as me, i know i can automatically connect with him or her because she’s obviously a person who can think for themselves and not just belong to some stupid clique like jocks, preps, or nerds.

  67. Lauren

    emo4lyfe?
Did you seriously just say this?
“all of us emo people are all different. that’s why we all dress and wear our hair in similar fashions.”
    And this?!
    “it expresses our creativity.”
    And this?!!
“every time i see someone with the same hair as me, i know i can automatically connect with him or her because she’s obviously a person who can think for themselves and not just belong to some stupid clique like jocks, preps, or nerds.”
If you are all dressing the same, that does not show creativity or thinking for themselves. Just because “emos” don’t dress the way “jocks, preps, or nerds” do does not make you a creative, suffering minority. As a matter of fact, you are becoming a trendy majority, and do, in fact, by dressing like each other, belong to a clique. “every time i see someone with the same hair as me, i know i can automatically connect with him or her”. Preps, nerds, jocks, ect. do the exact same thing with their style.
So why dont you take a look at your group and compare it with the “preppy” group. Your styles may be diffrent, but they all look the same, and “emos” all look the same (you said so yourself) so don’t go around thinking your better than everybody else! You conform to a group the same way they do!

And… the bangs are stupid. I have bangs/fringe, and, seriously, that style is just hair.
    Go Cailin!
