woman_touching_faceIf only acne disappeared with the other awkward phases of our teen years! A condition mostly associated with teenagers, acne afflicts as many as 25% of adult men and 50% of adult women well beyond high school graduation. Dermatologist Vermen Verallo-Rowell offers some expert advice on clearing up adult acne for good.

“Several factors attribute to breakouts, so the first step toward blemish-free skin is identifying the cause,” Verallo-Rowell says. “Once the cause is accompanied with a proper skincare regimen, pimples will stop raising their ugly heads.”

Consider these causes and solutions from Dr. VMVR and soon you’ll be in the clear!

  • HORMONES: Hormone fluctuations from pregnancy, your period, menopause, stress and lack of sleep can lead to acne flare-ups.  Hormonal changes stimulate sebaceous glands, producing more oil and encouraging breakouts. Stop hormonal breakouts by reducing stress and getting a good night’s rest. If the situation can’t be avoided, use skincare products like a daily face wash that contains salicylic acid, an ingredient clinically proven to reduce acne.
  • GENETICS: Researchers have found that 50% of adults who suffer from acne have either a parent, sibling or child who also gets breakouts. If acne seems to run in your family, Dr. VMVR recommends getting a head-start on preventative care and adding anti-acne skincare products to your regimen before breakouts appear. Look for mild, non-comedogenic moisturizers and makeup,  and of course, skincare products containing salicylic acid.
  • DIET: Avoid “trigger” foods such as those high in salt, processed foods and those that have a high glycemic index and contain polyunsaturatead oils. Dr. VMVR notes that diets rich in Omega 6 fatty acids produce arachidonic acid from which pro-inflammatory hormones are formed, ultimately leading to acne!

If other family members have suffered with acne, consult a physician about the best preventative care and treatment and a proper plan tailored to your skin type.
