With summer here, it’s more important than ever to be knowledgeable about protecting skin from the sun. You probably know that SPF measures a product’s ability to protect skin from UVB rays, but here’s a new acronym you might not be familiar with: EPF.
EPF is short for Environmental Protection Factor and measures the potency of an antioxidant against the sun and pollution. The rating is based on a study by top dermatologists and chemists that ranked topical antioxidants for their respective abilities to resist UV rays, neutralize free radicals, and protect the skin’s lipid barrier. Here are the ingredients that fared best on the EPF scale:
- Idebenone (95/100)
- Vitamin E (80/100)
- Kinetin (68/100)
- Coenzyme Q10 (55/100)
- Vitamin C (52/100)
- Alpha lipoic acid (41/100)
