Cameron Diaz was one of the shining celebs to walk the Red Carpet at this year’s Academy Awards. Celebrity hairstylist Lona Vigi styled Cameron for the event, and along with her tips, we’ve created a great guide on how you can get this look at home. Here’s what you’ll need to recreate Cameron Diaz’s glamorous hairstyle yourself:

• Rollers
• Blow dryer with cool button and on/off switch for ionics
• Medium round bristle brush
• Volumizer
• Pin curl clips

1. Shampoo and condition hair as you normally would. After towel drying the hair, set the entire head in rollers. (Psst: Don’t sit under a dryer or anything – we’re taking care of that in a minute.)
2. Spray on a volumizer. Don’t take those rollers out!
3. First blow dry the hair with ionics turned off, volumizing by taking small sections of hair and using a medium round bristle brush to dry the hair back and up using high velocity and heat. (Stylist Lona Vigi used the Velecta Paramount Paris TGR 4000i blow dryer on Cameron.)
4. Next, “set” the hair and give it a boost of shine by turning on both the ionics switch and cool button to lock in curls and add a polished shine.
5. Finally, free those curls and hold each one in place with a pin curl clip.
6. Wait a few minutes, then brush out the hair, created a loose, soft wave pattern. Bring one side behind the ear and the other forward toward the face.
7. Finish with a light misting of hairspray.

It seems like every third sentence I read in beauty magazines is “Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize”. But we’re not all estheticians who are taught how to get that perfect glow — and some of us fear we’ll commit the mortal moisture sin of clogging our precious pores and end up more gooey than dewy. How do you work in your acne gels and other treatments? Where does toner come in? We’ve got a quick, simple guide to turn any girl who’s confused by the barrage of products and systems out there into a luminously complected skincare starlet:

STEP I: CLEANSE & TONE

Wet your face and apply cleanser onto a cotton ball (tissues can leave residue on your skin — not pretty). Start applying to your face from the center (nose and the parts of your cheeks closest to your nose) and work outward. Tone afterward, using a cotton ball and making only one sweep over your face — using too much toner or astringent can dry your skin out of healthy oils.

STEP II: TREAT PROBLEM AREAS

Now’s when you apply your acne gel, eyelash conditioning treatments, et cetera. Apply them in quantities directed by the label (usually a pearl-sized dab’ll do ya) with your fingertips, or a foundation brush if your fingernails are on the long side. (We don’t want to scratch that sensitive facial skin!) For stubborn blemishes, choose treatments with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide — they’re both proven to treat pimples very effectively.

STEP III: MOISTURIZE

First, pat eye cream along the brow bone and along your undereye area using your ring finger. (It’s the weakest finger, and we need minimal pressure here as this is the area with the thinnest skin.) After treatment products have dried completely, apply moisturizer as needed evenly over face, neck and decollete. If this is a morning treatment for you, apply sunscreen after moisturizer has fully absorbed. That’s it! Three steps — could great skincare get any easier?

As usual, MAC makeup is abound at this spring’s Fashion Week in New York City. MAC artist Charlotte Tilbury developed the vampy look to the left for Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. runway. “The feeling was 1930’s prostitute — trampy, smoky eye, deep ‘rougeoir’ lips and beautiful pale skin,” raves Charlotte.

Here’s exactly what Charlotte did so you can copy the look to a T and score the style for your Halloween debut as any character from The Black Dahlia:

EYES:

• MAC Eye Kohl in Smolder and Fluidline in Blacktrack – blended and smudged around and into the eyelid for a feline-shaped eye.

Wanna snag this modern whimsical hairstyle for your next hot date? You don’t even need short hair — I promise! Here’s how to snag Taylor’s style straight from the hairstylist behind the ‘do, Jemma Muradian:

1. To achieve this look, Jemma used a one-inch-barrel curling iron and a protective thermal spray by Shu Uemura Irondesign. “It’s really the best ever!” she gushes.
2. After spraying your hair, curl it by holding the iron horizontally to get Taylor’s signature ringlets.
3. Roll the ends of your lengths up and under themselves, pinning them at the nape of your neck with bobby pins—they’ll be pretty much invisible after you sweep the rest of the curls forward.
4. Then, loosen the strands of hair at the top of the crown to mess it up a little so it doesn’t look too “done”.
5. Finish by spraying with Elnett Satin Hairspray by L’Oreal to keep your flirtatious locks held in picture-perfect place.

Want a hair professional’s advice, but don’t want to pay the high salon price? No need to shell out the big bucks for a classy coiff — the ladies from fab NYC hair salon Butterfly Studio gave us the blow-by-blow(dryer) on scoring styling tresses when you don’t have the time or money for a salon visit. Here’s advice straight from the salon’s hairstyling professionals:

Kattia Solano on how to create va-va-voom volume:

1. First, apply a volumizing product on damp hair.
2. Then flip your hair over and dry it upside down, which is the key to creating volume at the roots. At first, it will look a bit out of control, but you can set the hair with Velcro rollers or smooth out with a curling iron.
3. If you use a roller set, blow dry with heat for a few minutes and then finish with cool air.
4. Remove rollers and brush or run your fingers through hair. If you use a curling iron, then you can set the curls in place by spraying 2 inch sections with hairspray and curling.

Dana Vuljevic on reducing oily buildup in hair:

“If you have oily buildup: add a 1/2 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid, such as Palmolive or Dawn, to your shampoo.”

Nicole Descoteaux on ditching hairspray buildup:

1. Shampoo hair as normal to prepare.
2. Create a paste with baking soda and water.
3. Work the paste into hair. Comb through and leave on for five minutes.
4. Rinse and condition for optimum results.

Kattia Solano on making hair grow faster:

“Brushing your hair 100 times a day will not make your hair grow faster.It simply stimulates the scalp, but it will cause breakage. To help your hair grow faster, simply massage the scalp for five minutes at a time. This will also stimulate the blood flow and will NOT cause breakage.”

Yikes! Went a little crazy with the tweezers, and now you’re stuck with brows that resemble Mr. Bigglesworth? I’ve got bad news for you, chickadee: once plucked, your eyebrows can take months to eventually grow back.

Luckily, we’ve got a little procedure to help cover up and fill in your sparse eyebrows. Here’s what to do:

1. Find an eyebrow pencil in a shade that matches your brows (or what’s left of them) as closely as possible.
   TIP: You can go slightly darker if you have naturally light brows like I do; just make sure it stays true to the tone of your hair color (that is, warm or cool tones).
2. Don’t have a pencil on hand? Try an eyeshadow that matches your brows. You can fill in color with shadow, although it may not look as realistic as pencil; try applying it wet if the effect is too powdery.
3. Use a brow stencil like Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Classic Stencils to ensure you draw your brows in a realistic shape; if you don’t have a stencil, just use a photo to draw an outline of the brows with a brow pencil, then fill in from there.
4. Pick up clear eyebrow gel at any drugstore. No need to spend a lot of cash on this product, though we do like the ones by Victoria’s Secret and Anastasia Beverly Hills.
5. Use the gel to smooth down and even out brows; it can also help to smudge excess brow pencil or shadow evenly through eyebrows and spread the color to those nearly bald areas without a too-intense effect.
6. Keep brows in place with a spritz of hairspray applied to a toothbrush. Brush your brows into place with the toothbrush or an actual eyebrow brush, if you’ve got one.

We’ve seen a lot of Old Hollywood-inspired hair and makeup looks recently. To make this Halloween a little more glam than usual, why not doll yourself up and be a ’40s movie star? (Note: we have another how-to if you’re looking specifically to do a Marilyn Monroe Halloween costume.) Here’s how to get your hair and makeup pretty as a black-and-white picture:

Step I: Old Hollywood Hair

1. Start by parting your freshly washed, still damp hair way to one side at the very top of your temple. Apply a shine-enhancing hair product like Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener.
2. Blow-dry hair straight, then push all your hair over one shoulder.
3. Use a large-barrel curling iron (at least 1 1/2 to 2″ ) to curl wide sections, with the iron barrel pointing vertically—that’ll give you those big, springy curls a la Veronica Lake. Don’t brush out the curl; just gently twirl pieces with your fingers to style and add a fine coat of flexible hairspray to keep curls in place.

Step II: Old Hollywood Makeup

1. Apply a light gold eyeshadow (we like BareMinerals Glimmer Eyeshadow in True Gold) on the lids. Use a matte light brown shadow in the crease, winging only slightly out on both sides toward the end of your eyebrows.
2. Wing out your black liquid liner on the top lash line only, then dab a bit of the same golden shadow along the lower lash line. Eyes will really pop if you leave lower lids bare except for a little shimmer of golden shadow.
3. Finish the look with lots of mascara (we’re talking two and a half, three coats!) and a shiny raspberry-colored lipstick.
4. Need a costume, but no ball gown handy? Try a sexy vintage-looking bustier (read: one of those corsets you bought last year at Charlotte Russe) and you’ll be the belle of any Halloween ball.

Want a Halloween costume with an uber-feminine, playful punch? Then there’s no better way to go than the original girly girl: Barbie! Tons of Barbie inspiration hit the fall runways this season since the original Queen of Plastic celebrated her fiftieth birthday this year—but she still doesn’t look a day over 21, the wench.

Here’s how to DIY Barbie’s makeup look and score major points at your Halloween fiestas:

Step I: Barbie Eyeshadow

To steal Barbie’s signature vapid-chic makeup look, start with those big, empty, saucer-y eyes. Barbie eyeshadow can be done two different ways, with either warm-toned or cool-toned eyeshadow colors. Here’s a guide on each eyeshadow style:

1. For cool-toned Barbie eye makeup: dust a light, shimmery silver eyeshadow over the whole lid from lashes to brows. Add an extra dab to the inner corners  right by the tear duct to highlight.  Sweep purple-gray shadow in the crease, continuing only 1/4 of the way up the brow bone (after all, this is Barbie — we’re not going for sultry, we’re going for bubbly and slightly ditzy).
2. For warm-toned Barbie eye makeup: think pink! Coat lids in a light carnation pink color, then hit the crease with a darker, more intense magenta pink like what Barbie’s wearing on the left. Continue about halfway up the browbone.
3. For both shadow styles, blend eyeshadow one shade lighter than your natural skin tone (preferably with some shimmer) under the brows and slightly downward to highlight.

Step II: Barbie Eyeliner & Brows

1. Keep brows simple and in a slight semi-circular shape, like a very wide upside down U. No severe arch here! It’ll take away Barbie’s signature innocence.
2. Apply black liquid eyeliner all the way across the top lid, narrowing the line at the inner corners. Fan the line very slightly up and out toward the temples on the ends to mimic those big, exaggerated Barbie eyelashes.

   NOTE: If you have trouble with liquid liner, celebrity makeup artist Brett Freedman has a quick and easy way to master it: Use a felt-tip eyeliner and lightly dot on the lid, staying as close as possible to the lash line. Go back over the lid once more, and this time, press the felt tip firmly onto the skin to connect the dots.

Step III: Barbie Halloween Costume Cheeks, Lips & Finishing Touches

1. Finish off your pastel eye makeup look with bright pink cheeks – anything that looks sickeningly sugary on you will do.
2. For lips, choose a frosted bubblegum lipstick or gloss if you chose cool-toned eyeshadow. Try a true magenta pink shade of lipcolor if you chose warm-toned shadow, like Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in #573.
3. Wear a long, platinum blonde wig — or, if your hair’s naturally long and blonde, consider crimping. Barbie can be so ’80s like that.
4. Slip on a tight pink minidress and get your boyfriend and little sister to play Ken and Skipper, respectively. (Or they could switch it up, I guess…but that might be awkward.) Your night of trick-or-treating will be extra sweet!

The recent vampire craze will undoubtedly intersect with this year’s Halloween — and if you’re the feminine type, why not pick a bloodsucker whose costume is a sundress? Enter Jessica, whose name I have had to remind myself of by Googling “whiny redheaded vampire from True Blood” twice now. (Yes, twice.)

While her name may not be memorable (the actress is Deborah Ann Woll, by the way), her classy pulled-back curls sure are! Here’s how to score them yourself at home for a tasty look on Halloween:

1. Start by using a moisture-renewing shampoo to hydrate hair for a good styling base. Apply a mousse like Pantene Pro-V Ice Shine Mousse to damp hair for lightweight hold and added shine.
2. Blow-dry hair using a natural or combination bristle brush.
3. Curl hair by using a 1-inch curling iron. Wrap hair in the curling iron from tip to root to create tight curls; for defined curls, hold each section of hair in the curl formation as it cools after removing the iron.
4. Pull hair half-up starting approximately ½ inch above the ears on each side at crown level. Go ahead and hairspray it before you put those clips in; it’ll keep the two sides even without you fighting with your hair. (Trust me, it can be frustrating.)
5. Secure both sides with a clip or bow on either side of the head at crown level. Make sure they’re matching clips — Jessica’s look is old-fashioned perfection!
6. Apply Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Frizz control Anti-Humidity Hairspray to hair keep curls smooth and frizz-free — we want demure, pure ringlets, not static-y madness.

Halloween is fast approaching and for beauty junkies like myself, there’s no Halloween makeup look more appropriate than that of the original queen of makeup, the female pharoah famed for bringing kohl eyeliner into vogue: Cleopatra.

The inimitable Elizabeth Taylor embodied the Egyptian queen’s spirit in the epic 1963 film Cleopatra with a bold makeup look that was both regal and exotic. Here’s how to copy this classic, daring look at home so you can steal the show and stand out in a sea of costume-in-a-bag Marilyn Monroes at your Halloween party this year:

1. Prep your skin with foundation and powder. A little glimmer won’t hurt with this look if you have products with some shimmer to them, but don’t go overboard — with eyes this heavy, too-shiny skin will make you look a little too dirty and not remotely noble.
2. Be liberal with bronzer (an appropriately exotic choice: Global Goddess’ Goddess Glow South Pacific Shimmer) — looking regal is all about the cheekbones! Dab bronzer at the base of your cheekbones and blend forward.
3. Pluck & shape your brows into a high arch so that the pique falls directly above the middle of your upper eyelid.  Fill in with a dark pencil, emphasizing the stretch closest to your nose. Draw the back bend of the eyebrow in a thin, straight line at a 45-degree angle from your forehead. (Need help? Reference that picture on the right.)
4. Now the fun bit: apply blue eyeshadow from lash line to brow, making sure to hit the space beside your nose on each side. Violet, turquoise — any blue’ll do, as long as Christian Siriano would call it fierce.
5. Dab a teeny bit of sparkly cream-colored highlighter in your inner corners, but make sure to stay above the lower lash line.
6. Oh yes, it’s liquid liner time. Pull the top lid taut and apply in a thin line from the inner corner outward, thickening to about 1/8″ width at the middle of the lid. Line all the way across the bottom lid in a thin line, then as you reach the outer corner simply continue the line upward to meet the outer edge of your brow.
7. Begin a new line connecting with your existing liner at the outer edge of your bottom lid, tracing along the bottom edge of the line you just drew up to your brow. Curve the last 1/4″ of the line down, then connect the two bottom lines with a sharp swoop of liner coming down from the end of your brow.
8. Finish with black mascara and a nude lipstick (my current go-to for nude lips: MAC Lipstick Lustre in Close to Real). Braid in some beads and go walk like an Egyptian!
